The origin of the Jagannath Puri Temple is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. According to legend, Lord Jagannath is said to have manifested himself in the form of an idol from a log of wood, which was found by a king named Indradyumna. The story goes as follows:
King Indradyumna, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, had a divine vision in which he saw the deity of Lord Jagannath. Inspired by this vision, he set out on a quest to find and install the idol of Lord Jagannath.
Lord Vishnu guided King Indradyumna in his dream, instructing him to retrieve a wooden log from the sea to carve the deities. The king followed the instructions and found a massive log on the shores of Puri.
King Indradyumna sought the help of a skilled sculptor named Vishwakarma to carve the idols from the wooden log. However, Vishwakarma laid a condition that he would work in isolation and that nobody should disturb him until the idols were completed.
During the carving process, the queen became curious and anxious about the progress. Unable to control her curiosity, she entered the room where the sculptor was working, and Vishwakarma, upset by the intrusion, left the work incomplete.
As a result of the interruption, the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra were left incomplete. The deities were carved without hands and feet. Despite the incomplete form, the idols were installed in the Jagannath Puri Temple, and the temple rituals began. The belief is that the deities accept the love and devotion of the devotees in whatever form they are worshiped.
