Simlipal National Park is located in the northern part of Odisha, encompassing an extensive area of approximately 2,750 square kilometers. Its geographical coordinates are approximately 22.3804° N latitude and 86.3041° E longitude. The park’s strategic location, bordering Jharkhand to the north and Chhattisgarh to the west, contributes to the region’s ecological significance.

Odisha’s most important wildlife sanctuary is the Similipal Tiger Reserve, which covers an area of 2750 square kilometres. The forest derives its name from the Simul tree found in the region’s (red silk cotton trees).
Similipal National Park History
Simlipal National Park, situated in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, India, has a rich history rooted in conservation and biodiversity preservation. Established in 1956 as a wildlife sanctuary, it later gained the status of a national park in 1979. Named after the abundant ‘Simul’ (red silk cotton) trees that adorn the region, Simlipal has evolved into one of India’s premier national parks, celebrated for its diverse ecosystems and remarkable wildlife. Similipal has been part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserve since 2009.

Do’s & Don’ts at Similipal National Park
Do’s:
🛂 Carry your passport or photo ID for safari permit & entry.
🚻 Use hotel or park gate washrooms; carry sanitizer for makeshift toilets.
☀️ Vehicle is uncovered, so use sunscreen and wear a hat.
🍪 Bring snacks, cookies, and water for the safari; some parks provide breakfast.
🍽️ Have a light lunch before the afternoon safari to stay alert.
Don’ts:
🚫 Avoid bright colors; wear earth tones like green, beige, and brown.
🚭 No smoking or drinking inside the park.
🚮 Do not litter inside or outside the vehicle.
