Ekamra Kanan: Exploring the Tranquility

Ekamra Kanan, situated in the Capital city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is a picturesque botanical park that offers a serene retreat amidst urban life. Spanning across 500 acres, this park managed by the Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC) is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a hub of cultural activities and recreational delights.

Established in 1985 by the RPRC under the aegis of the Odisha government, Ekamra Kanan serves as a vital research institute dedicated to plant biodiversity preservation. Over the years, it has evolved into a cherished tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its diverse botanical collections and engaging events.

The park is renowned for its Cactus Garden, which sprawls over 100 acres and houses an impressive array of succulents and cactus plants. Visitors can marvel at more than 1000 varieties, sheltered within a grand pyramidal-shaped glasshouse. Additionally, Ekamra Kanan boasts other botanical treasures including a captivating flower garden featuring 72 species of scented flowers, a hibiscus garden with 52 species, and a mesmerizing rose garden showcasing over 1000 varieties.

Ekamra Kanan caters to visitors of all ages with its diverse recreational facilities. Children can frolic in the dedicated play area complete with slides and swings, while families can enjoy leisurely boating on the serene lake, spanning 45 acres. The park also features a charming musical fountain, inviting visitors to bask in its rhythmic allure. Moreover, a well-maintained walking track offers an ideal setting for jogging and strolling amidst lush greenery.

Throughout the year, Ekamra Kanan hosts a myriad of cultural events and exhibitions, enriching visitors with a vibrant tapestry of local arts and traditions. Notably, the annual flower show organized in collaboration with the Plant Lovers Association captivates audiences with its stunning floral displays, while the accompanying Plant Bazaar offers a delightful assortment of gardening essentials.

Ekamra Kanan welcomes visitors every day, except during the Holi festival. The park’s operational hours vary seasonally, with timings from March to October being 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and November to February from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entry fees are nominal, with special concessions for children and senior citizens. Additionally, boating charges are reasonable, ensuring an affordable outing for all.

Conveniently located within the city, Ekamra Kanan is easily accessible via private cabs, auto-rickshaws, or local buses from Bhubaneswar Railway Station and Biju Patnaik International Airport. Tourists can embark on a short journey of approximately 7-8 km to reach this verdant paradise and immerse themselves in its tranquil ambiance.
